NEW SHOOTERS ORIENTATION AND SAFETY BRIEFING

Starting in January 2010, we will be starting a new clinic.  It will be held on the second Sunday of each month starting at 9:00 AM in the town of Swampwater.  We will cover the basics of CAS along with rules, choosing your equipment, gun handling and most importantly SAFETY.  We will have several types of firearms there for you to compare and try before you buy.  While there is no charge for this, we do ask that if you use our ammunition, you reimburse us for it. It is strongly recommended that you attend these sessions before you shoot your first match.

If you are new to Cowboy Action Shooting, you will be need to complete a new shooter/safety orientation before shooting your first match with the Lake County Pistoleros. The above clinic is recommended in lieu of the day of the shoot briefing.

Even shooters experienced in other disciplines benefit from these orientations since many of the procedures for CAS differ from other types of competition. These orientations will also help the new shooter become familiar with what to expect at a match.

The orientation/safety briefing will occur before our monthly match.  Upon registration, which needs to be completed no later than 8:30am, you’ll be directed to an empty berm.  An experienced range officer will be there to greet you and conduct the briefing.

This orientation covers general range rules, equipment, safety procedures, shooting a course of fire and plenty of time for your questions.

Things that will be covered:

  1. Look at shooters equipment to see that the guns and leather are in good working condition.

  2. Lead ammo only is allowed.  No jacket.  Shotgun should be number 7 shot or smaller.

  3. Go over loading techniques without live ammo.

  4. Walk the shooter through a stage scenario dry firing but using timer.

  5. Show shooter how to stage and retrieve guns for firing from props or tables.

  6. Observe shooter loading safely, unload and reload until done correctly. Do not allow shooter to go to firing line if the loading technique is anything but 100% safe.

  7. Assist and observe shooter leaving stage with guns held correctly and safely.

  8. If time permits run the stage with live fire and timer.

  9. Observe proper unloading technique at the UNLOADING table and assist shooter back to LOADING table or gun cart depending upon time allotment.

  10. At this point, the range officer will decide if the shooter may continue and shoot the match.  If further training is needed, the shooter will be asked to stay and watch/learn and invited back next month at no charge.

  11. Specific range rules – handling of guns – cold range (no loaded guns except at loading table and firing line - speed limit – etc

  12. Shooter to attend match safety meeting

Shooter will be possed with an experience shooter to help guide them through the day.

Experienced SASS Shooter new to Eustis Gun Club

If you are new to the Eustis Gun Club and the Lake County Pistoleros, but not to Cowboy Action Shooting you will be expected to complete a new shooter/safety orientation before shooting your first match with the Lake County Pistoleros. To qualify for our mini-orientation, you must have shot a minimum of five organized SASS matches.  Even shooters experienced in other disciplines benefit from this orientation, since many of the procedures for CAS differ from other types of competition.

The orientation/safety briefing will occur before our monthly match.  Upon registration, which needs to be completed no later than 8:45am, you’ll be directed to an empty berm.

This orientation covers general range rules, equipment, safety procedures and plenty of time for your questions.

  1. Look at shooters equipment to see that the guns and leather are in good working condition.
  2. Discuss their level of experience and watch/talk about their gun handling skills.   At this point, the Range Officer will decide if they are experienced enough to shoot the match or if they need a more detailed orientation/safety briefing.

  4. If the Safety Officer feels additional training is needed, you will be asked to attend the longer orientation another time.
